Play therapy is a unique therapeutic approach where toys, games, arts, and crafts become the tools of communication, assisting children in expressing and processing their thoughts, feelings, and challenging experiences. At Moira’s practice, we focus on Child Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), also known as non-directive therapy. In this approach, the child takes the lead, setting the pace based on their emotional readiness and developmental stage, while the therapist follows, creating a safe and supportive space.
Our therapy is deeply rooted in the principles of Virginia Axline, a renowned figure in the field of play therapy. By offering children the freedom to explore and engage in play, we witness remarkable transformations and meaningful growth.
The benefits of play therapy are vast and far-reaching. Through play, children develop essential skills for building relationships, improving communication, and managing conflicts effectively. It serves as a powerful tool for relieving anxiety, enhancing self-worth, and building resilience. Moreover, play therapy facilitates behavior change and brings healing to family relationships, creating a positive impact on the overall well-being of the child and their loved ones.
Play therapy is recommended for a wide range of challenges that children may face. Whether it’s ADHD, aggression, attachment concerns, autism spectrum, behavioral issues, grief and loss, bullying, communication difficulties, developmental concerns, family relationship challenges such as divorce and separation, lack of self-confidence, nightmares, physical disabilities, school absenteeism, social isolation, or trauma, play therapy can provide valuable support and promote growth.
For optimal results, we typically recommend a minimum of 12 individual play therapy sessions. These sessions are ideally scheduled on a weekly basis, maintaining consistency in terms of time and location, with each session lasting approximately 40 minutes. Based on the severity of the child’s needs, additional sessions can be discussed in consultation with the referring teacher and parents, ensuring the best possible outcomes for the child’s progress and well-being.
